Far too often, especially in western civilizations, we place an undue emphasis on finding the answer. Eastern civilizations, by contrast, focus first on framing the questions. The process of inquiry is a highly prized skill in eastern cultures because they recognize that the ability to ask the right question invariably leads to the right result.
Peter Drucker, who spent much of his professional life working in the east, observed that outstanding outcomes are most frequently achieved by teams or leaders who start by asking questions such as “What needs to be done?” and “What is right for the enterprise?”
What does your organization ask you to be? Answer man? Questioner?
